Brief Overview of Fishery Department

The present District Fishery Development Office, South Salmara–Mankachar was upgraded from the Office of the Sub-Divisional Fishery Development Officer (SDFDO), South Salmara on 30 June 2022. Mr. Mohinoor Alam Khan, M.F.Sc., became the first District Fishery Development Officer (DFDO) and joined the office on 4th November 2024.

 

The office has its own premises with a land area of 0B–2K–12L, situated at Hatsingimari, approximately 500 metres from the District Headquarters. It is a fully fledged establishment functioning under the administrative control of the Director of Fisheries, Assam, Guwahati. The office is responsible for implementing fisheries development programmes and government schemes in the district, while all administrative and financial activities are managed by the District Fishery Development Officer.

 

The district is situated in the southernmost corner of Assam, West lines International Boarder of Bangladesh and Meghalaya to its East line. Total Area of the District is 568 sq. Km and Population Density is 980/sq. km. The mighty River Brahmaputra flows through South Salmara Mankachar from east to west with its tributaries. Basically, topography of the district is plain with pitches of hillocks such as Bansali, Rangapani, Koralbhanga, Dhanua etc. Total Fish Production of the District is 5814.50 MT where as fish consumption demand is 6066.55 MT. District produce 112 million of Fish seed (fry) in the year of 2025-26.

 

Fishery Department plays a key role in the increase of fisheries production as well as optimum utilization of the water resources. To aware the people about new technologies and about their benefits the Department organizes several training/ awareness programmes for the welfare of fish farmers. Moreover the Departmental officer implements various schemes which are allotted by the State and Central Govt. from time to time to provide extension services to the fish farmers, fishermen and fishery entrepreneurs. Fishery Department also takes initiative to implement the Fisheries Act & Rules and also aware the people to protect the fish during Ban period from 1st April to 31st July every year.
